If you are reading this post on my website you might have noticed that each post has some small star images under my userpics. This is the cool new feature that I've implemented just to feel something partly to motivate myself to write more in my blog, and partly because of the all-consuming nostalgia.
Basically, I've borrowed the star images from the old internet archive version of LiveInternet.ru — a blogging platform that was my main online community during my early teen years. Here's the archived webpage that explains how the star rating works — the more you post the more stars / higher tiers of stars (cooler colours) you get.
The star rating was a ridiculous way to make LiveInternet users seem more respectable, and it actually worked (at least on teens like me back in the day). The cooler stars someone had on their profile page — the more of an influencer they felt to others. With the website deterioration at some point the admins decided to get rid of stars, so now, even if a blog is still there, you will see none of them (in addition to the website admins scraping videos and most of the images off their servers). But I never got to more than 4 violet stars, and I might be still craving for this experience of seeing your blog grow. And to be able to implement it just for yourself? So fun!
Social media NUMBERS? Suck!
Pretty star icons? Cool!
I feel like it's such a powerful thing to be able to just search the old versions of the website on the Wayback Machine, save whatever is left, and reuse the stuff that was meaningful to you.
Obviously, I would never be able to reach thousands of posts just to get to something not gray, so my increments are just 5 posts for each new tier. Gotta boost those endorphins!
Next time though I will probably try to implement some more important features: likes and maybe even asks? Webmentions also look very cool, but I still can't comprehend them...
