Sonic the Hedgehog Sticker Album [Panini, 2024]

2024 December 14
Current Mood: Language school is extremely kicking my butt...
Now Playing: "Memory Empathy" by DJ Birdbath

Honestly didn't think that I would be writing about sticker albums again so soon, but the multinational corporations called Panini and SEGA must have seen me looking for a Sonic the Hedgehog sticker album and were suspiciously quick to release one.

A photo of the Sonic the Hedgehog sticker album and a booster pack for it, which is a small yellow carton box. The sticker album front page features a 3d render of Sonic in the center and 3d renders of Tails, Knuckles, Amy behind Sonic and to the left, and 3d renders of Rouge, Shadow, and Eggman behind Sonic and to the right. The booster pack front art features a 3d render of Tails printed in the center and 3d renders of Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Shadow, and Eggman are put into golden ring frames to the left and the right of Tails.

Like many Sonic things in my life I randomly stumbled upon it and decided to try it out with one booster pack (?) of stickers.

A photo of Sonic the Hedgehog sticker packs organized into a chaotic pile on a table on top of the sticker album, with a foil collectible card featuring Shadow the Hedgehog placed in the center of the pile.
Among the Sonic the Hedgehog sticker packs there was also a funny collectible card featuring Shadow. I'm glad that it's a foil one at least.

The album itself is pretty well made and is pretty fun to fill — it has holographic stickers, various shapes of rounded stickers, promo-stickers with screenshots from most of the recent Sonic games, a good big selection of Sonic characters with whole pages dedicated to each of them, a reversible 3-page-wide sticker poster, and a lot of Uekawa art!

Honestly surprised by the effort to make sticker designs diverse enough. I'm also impressed by the decision to make game screenshot stickers with foil frames — what a bold promotional move, lol.

Out of 35 stickers + 6 stickers attached to the album itself we had only 4 duplicates, which is pretty cool, but also kinda obvious, since that's only approximately 1/5th of the whole sticker collection.

Here are some of my favourite album pages:

A photo of a page spread from Sonic the Hedgehog sticker album, featuring the Green Hill Zone background and three stickers with Sonic running and jumping around.
A whole page spread of Adventure-style Sonic just running and jumping around the Green Hill Zone.
A photo of a page spread from Sonic the Hedgehog sticker album, featuring the Chemical Plant background and four stickers of Tails, Rouge, Doctor Eggman, and Cubot doing various poses.

A photo of a 3 page wide poster from Sonic the Hedgehog sticker album, featuring character art of Team Dark, Babylon Rogues, Doctor Eggman, Metal Sonic, Cubot — all drawn in the style of Sonic Adventure 2 promotional art.
A whole reversible 3 page wide poster with "bad" Sonic characters on one side, and "good" Sonic characters on the other side.

What I've completely forgotten about with these sticker albums is the whole pre-Internet community of sticker album enthusiast kids who were writing to kids / teen magazines in "Looking for friends" sections in order to exchange their duplicate stickers via mail with other kids. I never did that, but now that I'm thinking about it — maybe I should have! Sounds like a pretty fun activity that could also save my parents some money...
