Museum für Naturkunde Berlin

2025 February 14
Current Mood: thinking about it
Now Playing: PYOKN - BE YOURSELF

Had a chance to visit Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin recently. It seems to be in the process of moving / renovating / expanding now, so some of the rooms were pretty chaotic, but there was still A LOT to see. Haven't been in such a big museum in a long time.

I also haven't seen so much taxidermy at one place in a long time (including a big space dedicated to how they do it and how they claim they are the best at it), and it made me uncomfortable and made me question nature museum ethics in general. I'll have to read more and learn more on that topic. If you know some good articles or books that look critically at the history of nature museums — please share them in the comments!

I had a couple photos of taxidermy mounts that I wanted to post here with other stuff, but in the end I decided against it. I'm still leaving the photo of the dead fish freezer so you could imagine some of the rooms they have there at the moment — be careful when scrolling further.
