Blogposting still takes a lot of effort out of me, but I must keep the dream alive! Also, my blog will get a new dark-grey star soon :)
Cool Games
-
Mamono Sweeper HUGE by Hojamaka Games — turns out Dragonsweeper wasn't the first to introduce the idea of a dungeon crawler minesweeper after all. After the first major update of Dragonsweeper, that I didn't like at all, I've spent even more time playing Mamono Sweeper.
-
CSS Puzzle Box by Blackle Mori — this absolute cohost classic has been released as a standalone web game. Highly recommend playing it if you haven't yet.
-
Hopefully, in April I will finally play all the interesting small games I've been meaning to check out, so there will be more to write about in the next compilation post 🙏
Cool Art
- The Candy Lady Adoption Center by Shaenon K. Garrity — I really enjoyed looking through the original thread of Candy Ladies on Bluesky and was surprised to see the adoption page for them. All proceeds from the adoption go to the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.
Writing On Games
- Escaping Game Design by Lily Belmira — really enjoyed this essay about escaping game design for the sake of game design and learning other crafts to tell more meaningful stories through video games. Her latest game Wingless Fairies was one of my favourite games of 2024, and I am definitely inspired by her approach to interactive storytelling.
You can have an incredible idea for a game, but if you cannot structure a story, write prose, etc, then you cannot convey ideas, and your art will only inspire people to make more video games.
Writing On Life
For a moment, it worked. I spoke as a guest of massive car companies, as an oh-so-rare trans voice at internal Pride events. I knew in the back of my mind that rainbow capitalism was an uneasy alliance, but I was trying to work with what I had. It felt like maybe—slowly—we were gaining the capital and the toehold that might allow us to eke out our lives. Maybe the trans kids that came after us would have it better and easier.
It took five months after the last speech I’d done for [specific car company] for it to disband its LGBT advocacy group, in an obvious and immediate capitulation to the whims of the incoming administration.
- Let's Play Life by Liz R — I haven't finished it yet (it's a very big post!), but so far it feels like a substantial reading on the topic of the USian nostalgia crisis, and it also talks about Sonic '06 later?? I'm intrigued 👀
