Hamburg, Alter Elbtunnel

This August, while visiting Hamburg, I finally went to what I've been calling ДЫРА (HOLE), almost a year after I've found out about it from a neighbour who was very impressed after having seen it. I'm talking about Alter Elbtunnel [wiki] — a cargo tunnel under the river Elbe that was used to access the shipyards and docks on the other side and now operates mostly for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river. I am calling it "hole" because last December I had a chance to go there alone, but I went into the wrong door and entered the stairs part of the elevator shaft down the tunnel. I instantly got immense vertigo from just looking at the edges of the staircase and couldn't get myself to look down the shaft, so in my imagination it stayed a deep deep hole down into the unknown. Until we went there with my partner and a friend this August.

We made it all the way to the shipyards and back (both times using beautiful wooden door elevators that I didn't get good enough shots of), and I was honestly surprised by how long the tunnel actually was. If only every second person in the tunnel wouldn't scream or make loud sounds to scare people (or entertain themself) because of an immense echo effect inside....
