During our trip to München we had a chance to visit the Alps and to ascent to one of the mountain peaks. Turns out, there's a whole transport infrastructure built around Zugspitze at the German-Austrian border, and one can easily get there from München central train station on a regional train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The one hour and a half trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen was already very picturesque with big mountains and beautiful lakes already on the route, but then riding to the Zugspitze plateau on a cog train from 700m to 2500m elevation was even more impressive.
We got lucky with the weather: at first, I got nervous when on the way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen we entered a very thick fog area for a short time, but when we arrived to the mountain the visibility was as good as we could hope for with the overcast weather that day.
There were also very few tourists / skiers / snowboarders going up with us, probably because it was the middle of one of the work days.
This post is dedicated to this ascension part of our trip and several photos were taken through train windows. Next post will feature photos from the plateau and the peak, and the last post will have photos from our descent to Lake Eibsee.
