Yesterday I submitted a new Lego MOC (My Own Creation) for the R.R. Slugger's upcoming showcase video. Every summer he chooses a new theme and anyone who's interested can submit photos of their creations. This was my first original lego build in quite a long while. I left all my lego stuff at my parents' place before moving, but I've been slowly buying one small set after another one during the last couple of years, and have accumulated enough to finally try something again.

This post is not about my new moc though, I will make another post specifically about it when the showcase video goes up. Today I just wanted to archive my first attempts at creative lego building.

First, I should probably say that lego was probably my main special toy interest throughout most of my childhood. I got my first set on my 4th birthday, and it was basically the main thing my parents were gifting me for my birthdays until I turned 12. Whenever I wasn't allowed to play video games or couldn't go outside with friends, I was most likely building something with Lego and making up various scenarios to play with it. I was also spending an unreasonable amount of time looking through the catalogues and weighing in on whatever new set had the best value for whatever money my parents could afford to spend on the next birthday gift for me. I was also lucky to have this interest intersect with the most creative years of Lego ('99-'02, the years when they almost went bankrupt, hell yeah).

My second period of trying to get into lego was somewhere in the first half of 2010s when it became very prominent in Geek Culture, and also when we got our own Boutique Lego Stores instead of various toy store resellers. I started earning some money, so at some point I've hyped myself up to buy one of those fucking houses (10211 Grand Emporium). It took me and a couple of my friends 2 days to finish it, and when we finally did it, it felt like the most pointless waste of money. Not only did the building process feel very repetitive and tedious, in the end the assembled set just felt like a big slab of plastic with some decorations. I realised that since the building process wasn't as entertaining as I hyped myself to expect, there was basically nothing in it for me besides that. I didn't know what to do with it after the assembly! The feeling of wonder have disappeared long before we finished building the set. I tried to make some photo comics with it once, but it got nowhere, so I just left it on a windowsill at my parents' place for several years (yess, those light bricks got cooked) and mostly just stopped caring about legos.

My interest was brought back to life again in 2022 when (for some reason, probably a youtube algorithm) I started digging further into the history of the Lego Bankruptcy Era and discovered... Galidor. Somehow, I have completely missed the series in my lego catalogues, so I got very surprised and invested. A year after cultivating this nostalgia in a small friend group I went to my parents' place to sort out my old lego sets, and that coincided with one of the folks in that friend group recommending an R.R. Slugger video... This super concentrated mix of nostalgia resulted in me getting two Galidor sets (with missing parts) from a local online marketplace (my first experience of buying a used lego set) AND getting a new Dreamzzz set (71458 Crocodile Car) after I saw in one of the Slugger's videos that Galidor-to-System connection parts existed.

This has started my (short) journey of compulsively buying super cheap older sets from moms and dads of grown up kids all across Russia. Those were mostly Creator 3-in-1 sets, but I was also lucky to get a couple of cheap Lego Elves ones. I learned how to wash used parts using a salad spinner and a bit of vinegar! I also learned in a dramatic way that old brown parts are the most brittle ones... Around the same time I also started following Sunfire on cohost for their interesting moc builds (link to their mocs on tumblr) — and that's basically how I acquired enough materials and interest in moc building to finally get to the point where I'm reposting my old chosts featuring my first lego mocs.

LEGO Egg Pawn MOC (November 3rd, 2023)

Accidentally spent the whole night yesterday building my first serious attempt of a LEGO MOC. Who would have thought that with 71458 LEGO DREAMZzz Crocodile Car and some other spare bricks you can build a pretty neat copy of an egg pawn!

Another shot where you can actually see that my Egg Pawn is not as round as it could be, but I still love him. T__T

LEGO Hovercar MOC (November 12th, 2023)

Tried to make another moc yesterday, this time it was total improvisation — just wanted to build a car using mostly magenta and dark green pieces.

Even though the final result feels overloaded and is hard to read, it was very fun to build. I wish I had more various pink pieces to replace the light grey ones — it kinda looks like the color was not set in the default material properties. -__-"

LEGO Dinobird MOC (November 17th, 2023)

Got inspired by my recent Takua 64 playthrough and made this cute dinosaur / bird creature last night using only two main colors: white and lime green. A couple days ago I started thinking that lime might be my least favourite lego color, but it's grown on me really quickly.

LEGO MOC: Bounty Hunter?.. with a flying kit?.. (December 4th, 2023)

Spent another night making a lego moc out of 31112 Wild Lion and 31088 Deep Sea Creatures. I've figured out some important techniques for anthropomorphic builds while making it, so I hope to make more of them in the near future.

I love how this one turned out, but I can't come up with a name for them... T^T
