It's been two weeks since RR Slugger has released his fan showcase video featuring dozens of custom lego builds under the "Dryrates" theme — basically what would the life of pirates be if the ocean was gone (desert pirates). My build got featured as well (at the 48:10 timestamp), and I'm making this post to publish the photos I submitted in my blog as well :)
When the theme for the showcase got first announced I was kinda worried that I wouldn't be able to participate this year because I just didn't have enough lego parts of particular colors (and no minifigs) to portray anything resembling pirates. I had something to depict deserts though — tank tracks. After assessing what else I had on my hands I decided to build something light and chill on top of those tracks, maybe something in the style of early Lego Belville / Lego Paradisa — basically expanding the showcase theme from traditional pirates to anyone living on boats who also has to deal with the ocean drought.
Here's the build description I submitted with the photos:
An abandoned tourist boat stolen by a couple of treasure hunters and modified to traverse the dry land. Trying to sustain themselves while endlessly roaming the desert, the treasure hunters eventually took to gardening right there on their boat.
Here are the photos I submitted (I really like how they turned out using only natural lighting):
Some of the most fun things in this build for me to use were not only the foliage and flowery parts, but also the two heckin' Sonic the Hedgehog animals (birds) I had lying around from the tiny badnik sets I had — I think they complement the boat really well!
